Music – 4
I like the way the song opens, I think the piano is really impactful, and I like the guitar that comes in. I also really enjoy the way he builds to the chorus. I think instrumentally this song is great. His singing is also nice, I like it when he puts on this affect, the deeper and slower voice. I also really like the middle part. Not my favorite saxophone solo but it works nicely in the song.
Poetry – 4
I usually start the song reviews with Music and Change, then go to poetry and read the lyrics as I listen. And you can imagine my shock when I give it two fours for music and change, and go to read the lyrics only to find that they are also a four. I mean this really could be a poem in my opinion, and a good one. I think there are several moving elements to this song lyrically. I wanted to quote my favorite parts, but I like almost all of it. It’s very rich in imagery, and touching in its description of this relationship. It’s a very deserved four.
Change – 4
It definitely changes, and you will miss out on the rewarding elements of the song if you only listen to a small fragment. There are many parts in this song. I mean even the difference between the chorus and the middle part is pretty big. This song has high-highs and low-lows.
Insight – 4
Okay so this is hard. I’m writing this category last, after the song has scored a four in every other category, so this will decide whether it’s a “perfect” song, because the debate is between a 3 and a 4. I think it’s a love song, but also not a classic love song, and I do feel he’s saying something unique. It does deserve a four, but does it deserve being the first “perfect” song? It’s kind of long, which isn’t something I score on, but don’t personally love in songs. I also know some of the upcoming songs that I’m pretty sure will get a perfect song score. Yeah okay. It can have it. Four.
Good – 4
I like this song a lot. I wasn’t super familiar with it before this project, but I’m deeply moved by how great it is, and how much I’ve enjoyed listening to it.
